The 2021/22 Scholars experience will be either one of virtual connection or a combination of virtual connection and in-person gathering. As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, we will determine if and when it is time to resume many of the aspects of the Scholars program that we know and love (i.e., gathering in large numbers). We can’t be sure what the fall will bring, so we are planning one term at a time for now!
In lieu of the Fall Gathering, we will be hosting regular virtual events from October to December 2021 (see dates and times below). In January 2022, we will assess the COVID-19 situation and make a decision as to whether or not we will host an in-person Gathering in March 2022 at UBC in Vancouver. If an in-person Gathering seems inadvisable, we will continue to host virtual events from January to March (dates and times would be announced in January if that is the case). The Fall term virtual event dates/times are below (these are subject to change, but please mark your calendar!):
Tuesday 26 October, 5-7pm
Thursday 28 October, 12-1pm
Friday 19 November, 12-1:30pm
Thursday 2 December 12-1pm
To receive both scholarship payments, it is expected that Scholars attend the virtual events and, if it takes place, the in-person Gathering. Events will cover a range of topics including leadership, networking, and career planning. If you’d like to apply but will have challenges making these days/times, please reach out and let us know in advance of submitting your application.
The firm deadline for all materials to reach Ch’nook is Noon on Wednesday 13 October 2021.
The Ch’nook Selection Committee reviews all on-time and complete applications and determines the cohort of Ch’nook Scholars.
Successful applicants are contacted within two weeks of the application deadline. Successful applicants will be provided with an acceptance letter that outlines the program objectives and requirements.
Ch’nook Scholars are asked to confirm their acceptance in writing, to send letters of thanks to Ch’nook funders, and to sign and return the Achieve and Contribute Agreement in a timely manner.
Ch’nook will announce the names, post-secondary institutions, and community affiliations of the 2021/22 Ch’nook Scholars to schools, funders, and media outlets.
Scholarship payments will be distributed in two separate installments of $1,000: the first after the first virtual event and the second upon completion of all program requirements. Ch’nook will issue payments to students electronically wherever possible, however, please allow up to eight weeks for processing and delivery.
Registrations for the 2021/22 Ch’nook Scholars Program will open late summer 2021.
