2004 the Shaw family

Celebrating the Shaw family

Shaw Communications Inc. was founded in 1966 by JR Shaw. The company has deep roots as a cable TV provider, launching the first schematic of a cable TV system in Canada, and delivering services under the name of Capital Cable Television Co. Through the 1970s, 80s and 90s, the company expanded its holdings to include a diverse range of communications products, including radio stations, cable systems and specialty television channels, digital cable, Pay TV and high-speed internet.

Approximately 2.1 million homes across the country are connected to Shaw, making it Canada’s second largest cable TV operator; it also has half a million digital cable subscribers. In addition, the company is Canada ’s largest provider of high-speed Internet access, supplying Shaw High-Speed Internet Service to almost 1 million Canadians.

In 1999, a new publicly traded media company, Corus Entertainment Inc., was spun off from assets previously owned by Shaw Communication Inc. Today, Corus Entertainment Inc. is one of Canada ’s leading media companies. Its principal assets consist of 50 radio stations, including The Edge, CFOX, Country 105, specialty television networks including YTV and Country Music Television and animation giant Nelvana. Corus is also a key player in the digital music market (DMX) and local cable advertising services (Digital ADventure).

Although Corus Entertainment is now a completely separate public company, the Shaw family continues to be a majority shareholder.
