BUSI 441 - Residential Property Management

Course Structure

This is a scheduled online course that is completed over 15 weeks. The weekly work typically includes reading one or more chapters, watching an instructional video, and completing a multiple choice assignment.  There are two term projects required and the course ends with a written online examination.

Lesson No. 2 – Fundamentals of Law
Lesson No. 3 – Professional Ethics, Negotiation, and Dispute Resolution
Lesson No. 4 – Introduction to Financial Statements and Budgeting
Lesson No. 5 – Fund Accounting and Taxation
Lesson No. 6 – Building Design and Construction
Lesson No. 7 – Controls, Maintenance, Security, Environmental Protection, and Hazardous Materials
Lesson No. 8 – Purchasing
Lesson No. 9 – Insurance and Risk Management
Lesson No. 10 – Personnel Management
Lesson No. 11 – Marketing and Leasing Residential Property and Condominium Governance

Weekly multiple choice assignments: 10% of final grade.

Project 1: 20% of final grade.  

This project requires you to provide property management advice and services to an investor who has purchased a multi-family rental property. Emphasis is placed on topics the were studied in the first half of the course including law and ethics, negotiations, accounting, and finance.

Project 2:  20% of final grade.

This project builds on the scenario presented in Project 1, focusing on the topics that were studied in the second half of the course. Students are required to develop strategies to improve on the existing space and practices as they relate to design, green elements, building operations, safety and security, risk management, and other elements.

Final exam: 50% of final grade. 
Short-answer written questions, multiple choice questions.
