An entrepreneur himself, Stephen Gable uses his accounting expertise to advise other business owners

Having earned an undergraduate degree, Stephen Gable had an idea of what he wanted to do in the future, but it took some determined self-reflection to identify and align his strengths and interests with a career. Today, as principal of the boutique accounting advisory firm he helped start and grow, he couldn’t be happier with his chosen path.

The Decision

Gable’s choice of program was influenced by three factors: the reputation of the UBC Sauder School of Business as one of Canada’s top business schools, the program’s considerable reputation with local industry, and the calibre of the faculty. “Of course, the proximity of the School to Whistler didn’t hurt either,” he says with a smile.

The Transition

Although Gable found the curriculum challenging and rigorous, he adapted to it readily. “My undergraduate degree is in finance,” explains Gable, “so I had a good idea of what I was getting into compared to many of my peers.”

The Experience

“What I found most valuable about the program was its role in helping me secure my first position with an accounting firm,” says Gable, who in addition to appreciating the faculty and curriculum, valued UBC DAP’s career development activities including networking events and job search assistance.

The Career

“I spend most of my week in my clients’ offices working as their CFO, helping to provide financial guidance and strategy in order to manage and fuel continued growth,” remarks Gable. “I enjoy so many aspects of my role, but I think my favourite is the opportunity to share in the journey of passionate, motivated entrepreneurs doing absolutely incredibly things in the technology sector. Being able to step back and say ‘holy smokes - we just built a company that made a million dollars!’ - is something I try not to take for granted.”
