The University of British Columbia has ranked first in Canada and 15th in the world in the Business Administration category of the influential Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

Also known as the Shanghai Ranking, the ARWU is one of the most widely-observed university measures, alongside the Times Higher Education and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) university rankings.

The 2018 ARWU Global Ranking of Academic Subjects involves a survey of more than 1,200 top global universities in 54 subject areas. Each subject is evaluated on five different indicators: the number of papers authored by an institution in an academic subject, the number of staff who have won significant awards, the percentage of internationally-collaborated papers, the number of papers published in top journals and the average impact of papers authored by an institution.

The ARWU ranking further reinforces the strength of UBC’s individual programs on a global scale; in March 2018, QS ranked UBC Sauder as a top 15 university in North America for Accounting and Finance as well as Business and Management. In addition, the Times Higher Education World University Ranking for 2017-2018 ranked UBC as the top university in Canada for Business and Economics, and 12th in the world for Accounting and Finance.
