BMW is the latest winner in the race to build the world's most efficient electric car.
According to the latest numbers from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the 2014 BMW i3 is the most fuel-efficient personal auto on the market, clocking in at more than 120 miles per gallon.
The coupe, which is all electric, is officially rated at 124 mpge (miles per gallon equivalent.) That makes it the most fuel efficient vehicle for sale in the United States.
While it's the most fuel-efficient EV to date, the i3's range falls shy of the Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model S. Those cars can travel 84 and 208 miles per charge, respectively, while the i3 can go only 81 miles (190 km).
The i3 charges off a wall mounted power converter, and works at most EV stations. BMW is pursuing "charging standardization and is involved in setting up a comprehensive network of charging stations."
According to BMW, operating the i3 produces no carbon emissions.
BMW wants to sell the i3 to drivers in big cities. The base price for the vehicle is set at $42,275, according to greencarreports.com.
The i3s are expected to hit U.S. roads this month. The company says it will be available in Canada by the summer.
