
Biography of Hari B. Varshney, FCA
Devotion to community and a remarkable business drive – these are the attributes that help to define the life and career of Hari B. Varshney.
Mr. Varshney, a Chartered Accountant (Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of BC), has been involved in raising over $150 million for various venture capital projects around the world. He is a Principal of Varshney Capital Corporation with his two sons.
He has been in the venture capital business since 1985, and during this period has been a director and/or officer of many North American public companies – in the process playing a pivotal role in British Columbia’s dynamic and growing economy. He has fostered companies in industries ranging from technology to modular buildings to mineral exploration.
A long-time supporter of UBC and many important charitable causes in B.C., Varshney’s philanthropy is evident in his remarkable service to the community over the past 25 years. He is currently the Chair of St. Paul's Hospital Foundation, and a director of Canada India Village Aid Association (CIVA), College of Denturists of BC, and the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (B.C.).
Hari Varshney’s commitment to the University of British Columbia is shared by his wife Madhu and his children Praveen, Peeyush, and Vandana. All three children are alumni of UBC.
As a family, they have donated over $300,000 to the UBC Centre for India and South Asia Research, the Hari and Madhu Varshney Lecture Series and other programs at the university – in which they are actively involved.
Their son Peeyush is a member of the Business Families Centre Advisory Board at the Sauder School of Business at UBC, while Praveen is a member of the business school’s Faculty Advisory Board. He also established scholarships at the Sauder School in his parents’ honour. The Varshney Capital Corp.’s Charity Golf Classic is held annually at the University Golf Club in support of children's charities, such as Canucks Place, St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation, BC Children’s Hospital Foundation and many others and has raised over $570,000 in the past 10 years.
In April of 2006, Hari Varshney received the British Columbia Achievement Community Award.
