VANCOUVER— Students in the UBC Sauder School of Business 2007 MBA program will engage with some of the foremost business leaders from a wide spectrum of industries once again this fall. The award-winning MBA Core curriculum – an integral part of the UBC MBA program -- annually invites leading business visionaries to the classroom.

The series takes place during October and November, and will include a first-time presentation from Carole Taylor, British Columbia Minister of Finance and a former Chair of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Vancouver Board of Trade and Canada Ports Corporation.

Speakers to the Core this year also include:

  • Boris Wertz, Chief Operating Officer, ABEBooks.com
  • Ajay Virmani, President and CEO, Cargojet Canada
  • Bjorn Moller, President and CEO, Teekay Shipping
  • George Pemberton, Officer-in-Charge, Integrated Market Enforcement Team, Royal Canadian Mounted Police
  • Bob Elton, CEO of BC Hydro
  • Derral Moriyama, Senior Vice-President -- Vancouver District, BMO Bank of Montreal

According to Steve Alisharan, Chair of the MBA Core at the Sauder School of Business, the line-up of MBA speakers this fall highlights the breadth of the academic program. “The essence of what we are doing is teaching the students about the integrated nature of business,” he said. “From finance to transportation to retailing, this year’s presenters truly speak to the importance of diversity.”

The Integrated Core -- an intensive 13-week foundation in finance, marketing, accounting, human resources, statistics, managerial economics, and information systems -- is at the heart of the Sauder School of Business MBA program. The Integrated Core is team-taught as one comprehensive course reflecting the inherent complexity of the business environment. Subject areas are taught individually, as well as from an integrated perspective, developing the students' understanding of the true multi-dimensional nature of business.
