Panel Event: A Step Beyond Business


In a society facing issues ranging from climate change to income inequality, how can business school students leverage their skills and knowledge to help business go beyond the bottom line?  "A Step Beyond Business" is an event featuring industry professionals focused on the triple bottom line in values-based businesses, traditional businesses with strong corporate social responsibility, and non-for-profit organizations. Students will gain practical insights based on these business leaders’ experiences and learn about opportunities for impact within not-for-profit and business sectors.

The event, which is co-hosted by the UBC Community Commerce Program and the Dhillon Centre for Business Ethics at UBC Sauder, will be moderated by UBC Sauder students Carissa Wong and Cathie Ji and feature the following panelists:

Imran Jiwa
Partner at Lift CPA and Director of Impact & Finance at Active Impact Investments

Imran has been operating at the nexus of sustainability and business for over 6 years.  After receiving his CPA designation, Imran transitioned from technology to sustainability services, where he advised companies on the reporting, trends, risks and opportunities relating to ESG issues.  After leaving the firm, he established his own practice where he supports values-aligned clients with contracted CFO, accounting and tax services.  Imran teaches a course at BCIT on Sustainable Accounting and Finance and is passionate about improving climate change literacy.

David Lee
Non-Profit and Social Enterprise Consultant

David has over 15 years of experience leading and facilitating significant management and change initiatives with corporate, non-profit and government organizations. As a consultant and as the Executive Director of Organization Development at the John Howard Society of the Lower Mainland of BC, he has led and supported partnerships across sectors, particularly in social enterprises and non-profit supportive housing. David is also an Accredited Partnership Broker and PBA Practitioner-Trainer. 

Isobel O’Connell
ESG and Change Management Principal at METAGNOSIS Consulting

Isobel is a recognized external relations strategist with 20 years of experience focusing on shared value, risk management and investor-led impact. She has held sustainability leadership positions in both the oil & gas and maritime industries and with international consulting companies whilst contributing to various national and international sustainability dialogues. Isobel has lived and worked in a number of locations within the Middle East, Central & South America, Europe, Canada, Asia, and Russia.

Laura Plant
Impact Economist in PwC's Sustainable Business Solutions team

Laura specializes in social, environmental and economic impact measurement and valuation techniques. She is part of global initiatives that are seeking to provide a common framework for business to understand their impact and calculate Social Return on Investment. She was part of the PwC team that worked with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development to develop the Natural Capital Protocol and she is currently on the technical committees for the Social and Human Capital Protocol and CPA Canada's Accounting for Sustainability Initiative.
