Join BCom alumnus Ian Crosby (BCom 2008), co-founder and CEO of Bench to hear the unvarnished truth of his start-up journey building North America’s largest bookkeeping service for small businesses.
Ian will take you “behind the scenes” as he discusses the importance of embracing the messy process of building a business, his inspirational and unique focus on corporate culture, why he’s committed to authenticity, and the leadership lessons he’s learned along the way.
Originally launched in 2013, Bench has raised $53 million to date. In 2017, Bench was ranked the fastest growing company in BC and the 4th fastest in Canada, according to the Deloitte Technology Fast 50. Ian has been named to Forbes 30 under 30 list, BC Business 30 under 30, and one of Canada’s Top 40 under 40.
Despite the accolades, Ian is open about the difficult times along the way, including almost going broke earlier this year. His unique decentralized leadership model combined with strong corporate principles and a laser focus on the company’s core mission have led to a remarkable turnaround. Bench is now growing at a rapid rate with plans to hire upwards of 200 new staff members and open a second location in Burnaby.
We’re delighted to welcome Ian to the Dean’s Speaker Series, which offers students and alumni a unique opportunity to gain insights on life, careers, and responsible leadership from some of our most successful alumni and community partners.

Ian Crosby is the co-founder and CEO of Bench, a service that makes bookkeeping effortless, affordable, and misery-free for busy small business owners.
Born out of a desire to eliminate financial stress from small business owners’ lives, Bench launched out of Techstars NYC in 2012. Since then, Bench has been among the top 20 fastest growing companies in the Deloitte Fast 500, raised over $50 million in funding, and has grown to over 350 employees. As it turns out, you can successfully scale giving a cr** about small business owners.
Ian is a graduate of UBC’s Sauder School of Business. He's received several awards for entrepreneurship, and has appeared on Canada's Top 40 Under 40 list and the 2016 Forbes’ Top 30-Under-30 list in the Enterprise Technology category. He’s been known to beat video games using spreadsheets, and if he were an animal, he’d be an elephant (intelligent, empathetic animals with complex social lives, but too big to eaten). On top of video games and existential animal musings, Ian seeks to permanently democratize humanity’s ability to understand and navigate their financial lives.
He happily resides in Vancouver with his wife and two children, and tweets at @IanWCrosby.
