UBC Sauder LIFT is a program that transcends international borders to deliver essential business tools to a classroom of aspiring entrepreneurs. At its core, LIFT represents: Leadership, Innovation, Fundamentals and Training.

Led by UBC students, this business training program is designed for youth in Kibera and Mathare – two of the largest slum communities in Nairobi, Kenya.
Kibera is one of the most studied areas in Africa with an estimated population of over 1-million people in just 2.5 square km.

Mathare is home to approximately 500,000 people in an area of only 1 square km. It is one of the oldest and most disadvantaged communities in Kenya.

Since 2006, LIFT has served over 800 participants
LIFT is comprised of Sauder students from diverse backgrounds, with 60% women and 40% men.

In the long term, LIFT strives to nurture entrepreneurship and business ideas to reduce Kenya’s high unemployment rate.

UBC students partaking in the program are exposed first-hand to a unique opportunity to learn about other cultures, witness the growth of a business, and understand the impact education has on economic development at a granular level.
