Mabel Wong

“I can tell that Jeff Kroeker has been talking about me when I get a stream of LinkedIn contact requests from UBC Sauder students,” laughs Mabel Wong (BCom '04). For Dr. Kroeker, a popular accounting professor well-known for remembering and following the careers of his many students, Mabel is something of a poster child for how to succeed in business, with heart.

Such is Mabel’s sense of care and commitment, that despite a demanding workload as a Managing Director at Brookfield Asset Management, she accepts all those contact requests and is very generous with her time advising and mentoring students and young alumni.

As someone who has been very disciplined and focused on her own professional career path, Mabel values the importance of a leg-up. Since graduating with a BCom and working (while studying for her CPA credentials) at Deloitte, Mabel has spent the last decade building an impressive career at Brookfield, a Toronto-based global alternative asset management company. With a clear ambition to eventually become a Chief Financial Officer, Mabel has benefited from being mentored while working strategically in various positions within Brookfield, most recently being appointed CFO of one of its publicly listed subsidiaries, Acadian Timber Corp in addition to her other core responsibilities within the Brookfield Infrastructure group.

Being a successful woman in business, Mabel is very aware of her ability to serve as role model, both within Brookfield, where she sits on the women’s advisory council, and in her personal life. Her involvement with a women’s giving circle led her to a current role as Board Member and Chair of the Finance Committee for UNICEF Canada. Being actively involved with an international development organization focused on the well-being of children which is not only aligned with her personal values, but also allows her to leverage her finance background, is an important balance to her intense work life. Although she confesses to often not getting enough sleep, she believes she is living her best life.
