The Dhillon Centre for Business Ethics is pleased to host a talk on “Global Trends in ESG Integration”, by Monika Freyman, CFA, on February 11th, 2019.

With sustainability leadership growing amongst capital market influencers, Freyman will discuss why many investors are deciding to integrate environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues into their portfolio process and how it is being done. She will address major trends from around the world reflecting how and why investors are embedding ESG into their investment decision process, as well as what we can learn from different approaches from Europe, the US and Canada. Freyman will also present research on developments related to the ‘E’ of ESG analysis with the use of big data, satellite imagery and artificial intelligence. Finally, she will also talk about various career paths for evolving professionally in this space.

Monika Freyman is Director of Investment Engagement at Ceres, in Boston, Massachusetts. She works with institutional investors to deepen their integration of ESG factors, and in particular water, into portfolio management and engagement processes. She also directs the Investor Water Hub, a working group of Ceres Investor Network that promotes peer-to-peer learning and with over 40 institutional investors developed the Investor Water Toolkit, a how-to guide on ESG and water integration. Freyman actively contributes to the CFA Institutes Enterprising Investor Series along with the CFA Institute’s ESG continuing education curriculum. A major theme in her work is to more closely connect the scientific and financial fields. Prior to Ceres, Freyman worked as a research consultant for the Initiative for Responsible Investment at Harvard and as an emerging market analyst on the buy and sell side.  She is a graduate of commerce from UBC.
