ChopValue Manufacturing creates innovative composite materials using recycled chopsticks. Developed by Felix Böck a UBC PhD student in the Faculty of Forestry, ChopValue aims to remove more than 100,000 disposable chopsticks that are sent to Vancouver’s landfill every day in order to give urban waste a second chance.
Grain sources, sells and mills 100 per cent Canadian grains and beans, aiming to reconnect customers with the sources of their dry goods. GRAIN rejects conventional practices of processing, storage and distribution.
Meatme is an online marketplace for consumers to connect with local farmers for healthy and honest meat. The company crowdfunds whole animals, then works with local butchers and logistic partners to deliver meat straight to customers’ doors.
Naledo Foods and Beverages Inc.
Naledo manufactures Truly Turmeric, a healthy and delicious paste that differs from powdered turmeric. Naledo ethically sources ingredients in partnership with Belizean farmers, helping them to build a brighter and more secure future for their families and communities.
Quupe ("koop") is an online rental platform that provides users a way to rent things from their neighbours. Founded by four master's students from the Centre for Digital Media, Quupe started with the realization that people have valuable things in their homes that sit around gathering dust, and now they want to get stuff out of storage and into the world, for everybody to own it.
Zero Waste Market
Zero Waste Market is a 100 per cent package-free grocer on a mission to reduce all food-related waste, including food waste and plastic pollution, and change the way people grocery shop. At Zero Waste Market, customers bring their own reusable containers to purchase local, organic and ethically sourced whole foods and home items.
The organizations selected for the 2015 program are:
Arbutus Medical has developed a $400 alternative to $30,000 surgical drills, allowing safe and effective treatment of patients in the developing world, as well as in disaster relief. With support from Grand Challenges Canada, the device has been in use in Uganda since mid-2013 and treated over 2,000 patients. They have just expanded across the conflict zones in Syria and eastern Ukraine, and supported the relief efforts in the Philippines.
BioClens Environmental provides sustainable bin cleaning and food waste solutions for Vancouver’s 2015 food waste ban. The primary service is mobile onsite cleaning of commercial totes, residential green bins and more. A water recycling system, and biodegradable, probiotic products responsibly eliminate odors, mold and vermin-attracting mess. The feature product is The Greenlid, a countertop compostable compost bin available for bulk discounts to schools, offices, and multi-unit residential buildings.

Change Heroes is an online fundraising platform that helps people engage their friends to fundraise for schools and libraries to support education in developing countries. With customized and personalized videos, engagement through social media and a cause young people can relate to, Change Heroes aims to increase the philanthropic activity in this demographic.
Goodforks (previously SeaMarket) supports a new sustainable food system and advocates savvy consumerism to create wealthier, healthier and happier communities.
Goodforks goal is to empower and promote organizations to get back-to-basics in a way that accelerates their business and makes communities thrive. Through implementing human-centered design, they strive to shape the new future of food. Goodforks is deeply rooted in the belief that food systems have the power to change the economic viability of communities. Food should taste good and do good, too. "We work with growers to help facilitate their successful entry into the retail environment. Through a new way of thinking we are truly shifting the way traditional food producers conduct business. Through 360 degree consulting, our services range from marketing, design, advocacy, retailer relations, research and sales."
Connect Health is pioneering a model of integrative medicine, providing effective whole person care by combining the best conventional medicine and complementary approaches. This approach is proactive, offering the best preventative strategies to maintain good health. SHIFT URBAN CARGO DELIVERY
Shift is transforming the urban goods movement by using pedal powered trike vehicles for last-mile deliveries in the downtown core, eliminating congestion and pollution. Shift is a worker co-op providing empowering employment for young people within the green economy.
CleanStart BC is a hoarding management and junk removal company that seeks to empower people with barriers to employment. We hire people with physical or psychological health challenges from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside (DTES) to provide quality service. Each of our staff is professionally trained. We are fully licensed, insured, and Worksafe BC covered. We use biodegradable products and are committed to recycling and donating as much as possible.
Victory Gardens provides garden infrastructure for any kind of space, helping people rethink urban space and bring food to where it didn’t exist before. Victory Gardens also provides educational tools to make organic growing easy and accessible, and increases consumer awareness and education around food and urban food systems.
The vision for the Coast Capital Savings Innovation Hub is to propel social entrepreneurship forward in BC, establish the province as a world class centre for social innovation and social venture development, and create a dynamic and supportive space for social ventures to grow.
The Coast Capital Savings Innovation Hub is designed for ventures wanting to embrace social innovation while using business models to create impact in society. The accelerator program brings together early stage social ventures with BC’s social innovators, seasoned entrepreneurs, investors, faculty, alumni, and students to:
- Accelerate the growth of promising social ventures and the impact they create
- Increase the number of social ventures focused on tackling social and environmental issues facing our communities
- Build the skills and networks of social entrepreneurs
- Provide applied learning opportunities for the top students in the province and build the talent pipeline for the social venture sector
- Promote economic, social and environmental change in BC communities
The Coast Capital Savings Innovation Hub is an accelerator program designed to support high potential social ventures so that they create deep and long lasting social impact in their communities, the world of business, and society at large.

You are passionate about social ventures and so are we. If your venture meets the following criteria, you are eligible to apply for the Coast Capital Savings Innovation Hub social venture accelerator program:
The primary mission of your venture is to create social or environmental impact on individuals or communities.
An innovative idea
You have an innovative product, service or approach to address a social or environmental problem or are applying an existing approach in an innovative way.
You launched your business in the last 1-3 years and see that your business has great potential. You have a plan for your venture to become financially sustainable – generate sufficient revenue to operate, grow, and repay any investors.
Your venture takes into consideration the impact of its operations on the environment, people, and communities in which it operates.
You are able to prove that your venture’s activities create real and measurable impact.
Stage of Venture
Ventures must be in operation for a minimum of one and no more than three years.
The Venture can take any legal form.
Individual entrepreneurs or founding teams of up to three may apply.
Entrepreneurs must be willing and able to work out of the accelerator’s co-working space (221-181 Keefer Place, Vancouver) for a 12month period (Jan 2015 – Dec 2015) and participate in all program activities.
There is no cost to participate in the program but we ask for a commitment to all the program's components.
