How to Satisfy the English Language Proficiency Requirement (ELPR)

The English Language Proficiency Requirement must be satisfied prior to exam registration, however, if licensing is your intention we strongly recommend that you consider satisfying the ELPR prior to course registration. ELPR documents may be submitted before course registration or at least two months before exam registration. Please note that ELPR documents will not be returned. Therefore, students wishing to keep original documentation will need to send notarized copies of the original documents.

Effective September 1, 2017, for Real Estate Trading Services, Rental Property Management and Strata Management Licensing students, the ELPR may only be satisfied by achieving a level 7 or higher on each of the four components (reading, writing, speaking and listening) of the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program - General (CELPIP-G) test or by being exempted from the requirement in one of the following ways:

  1. Graduation from a recognized university degree program at an accredited university, college or technical institute at which English is the primary language of instruction.
  2. Licensed in another jurisdiction in Canada and have satisfied that jurisdiction’s language requirements.

Prior to September 1, 2017, in order to satisfy the English Language Proficiency Requirement, students must meet one of the following:

  • Have graduated from a recognized University degree program at an accredited university or technical institute at which English is the primary language of instruction.

  • Have successfully completed a three-credit course in English composition or English literature at an accredited university, college or technical institute at which English is the primary language of instruction.

  • Have successfully completed the Real Estate Trading Services Licensing course (formerly named the Salesperson's Pre-licensing course), the Rental Property Management Licensing course, the Mortgage Brokerage in British Columbia (2006 onwards) course or the Strata Management licensing course.

  • Have completed the requirements for the Certified General Accountant designation, including the Business Writing Skills course or equivalent.

  • Have held an active real estate license in Canada or the United States for not less than one (1) year during the three (3) years preceding the date of the application.

  • If none of the above apply, students are required to take the LPI Exam.
