About Live Webinars

Pre-Reading: Students enrolled in a live webinar are provided a printed copy of the course workbook in advance of the session and will be provided with supplementary materials online. Students are expected to have completed the pre-reading before attending the live webinar. As well, students should print out a copy of the PowerPoint presentation for the sessions, for ease of note taking. A pdf of the PowerPoint presentation can be found on the course website, usually at least a day before the scheduled live webinar.

Session Format: A live webinar takes place in an online classroom. The live webinar session includes a live narrated presentation that you access using your computer speakers. There is a live chat window for typing in questions and if you have a microphone, you can ask questions directly to the presenter.

Accessing the Live Webinar: Once registered, you will receive an email confirmation with login details. It is very important to visit the webinar room well in advance to test your computer system to ensure it is working optimally. All the information you need is contained below.

Prior to your session, make sure you can access the webinar link. Follow the "Viewing Webinars" link below for instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why should I attend a live webinar?

The CPD course workbook is a comprehensive overview of the subject area, intended to be completed by self-study. However, some people say there is no substitute for a live instructor and if we can't offer a face-to-face classroom session in every centre across Canada, then a live online classroom is the next best thing! However, if you find the timing of the live webinars does not work for you, you may wish to review the UBC Real Estate Division's self-study CPD offerings. You may also wish to read through this Learning Advisory article published in Canadian Property Valuation to learn more about how a live webinar could work for you.

Is the technology difficult to handle? Will I have to install software? Do I need any extra equipment?

The CPD live webinars use Blackboard Collaborate. It is a web-based application that requires the installation of the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher to launch webinar sessions. We suggest you install the Launcher and test the webinar well in advance of your session using the Firefox web browser (www.firefox.com); if you have any problems, you can find a full list of the Blackboard Collaborate system requirements here or review the Launcher Quick Reference Guide.

What audio equipment do I need to participate in the live workshop?

You will need operational computer speakers or headphones in order to hear the presentation. Most participants find that using headphones reduces the risk of "feedback" noise. Note that a microphone is not necessary to participate. Students may wish to use a microphone to speak to the instructor and classmates, but this may also be done by typing into the text chat box.

I have a slow (dial-up) Internet connection, can I participate?

Blackboard Collaborate is designed with low bandwidth users in mind, but a broadband internet connection is highly recommended. For a full list of Blackboard Collaborate system requirements, please see this page.

What are the minimum computer requirements?

In general, any relatively modern personal computer should be powerful enough to view a Blackboard Collaborate session. You may view the specific requirements here. If you have problems starting the session, you will find instructions and further support on our webinar viewing page. Note that many technical problems are eliminated by using the Mozilla Firefox browser (free download here: http://firefox.com).

My session is about to start and my login won't work. What should I do?

Send an email to webinar@realestate.sauder.ubc.ca or phone 604.822.2227 (1.877.775.7733) and press 0 to speak to the receptionist. We can provide you with a direct link to your live webinar or offer further assistance.

I am in the live webinar but the audio is choppy and keeps cutting out. What should I do?

This is usually the result of low connection speed. You may have a problem with your wireless connection - try plugging your computer directly into your router.

I have never been in a live webinar, do you have any tips on how to optimize the experience?

Some tips on ensuring your Webinar experience is as optimal as possible:

  • Visit the viewing webinars pages early and make sure that you try to log into the webinar before the session.
  • If you have any problems running the webinar, then install the Firefox browser and try again (free download here)
  • Show up at least 15 minutes early, so if there are problems, you can troubleshoot them before the session starts.
  • Do the pre-reading, so the instructor can quickly advance beyond the bare basics.
  • If you need to step away from your desk, use the "Away" icon, so the instructor knows you aren't there.
  • You can send a message with text chat to one person or to everyone in the class.
  • Use the icons to show how you're feeling: amused or laughing, confused, tired, happy, etc.
  • If the instructor asks a question, respond in text chat or using the icons.
  • If you want to ask a question, either use text chat or use the "raise your hand" icon. Either the instructor or moderator will respond as soon as possible, usually in a pause between slides. General questions should be sent to the whole class in text chat, not directly to the instructor.
  • If you are having technical difficulties, contact the moderator directly with text chat -- they will help you out without disrupting the rest of the class.
  • Fill out the survey at the end, so we can learn from your experience and ensure these are the best they can be.
Will I have to speak? What does "Active participation is mandatory" mean?

Participants may speak if they wish, if they have a working microphone. However, it is not required; Blackboard Collaborate also offers a text chat feature if you have questions for the instructor or wish to "chat" with other students. Active participation is mandatory, and this is achieved simply by answering polling questions during the session and filling out the end-of-course survey.

Do I have to attend the live webinar to claim the CPD credits?

Live webinar attendance is optional. If you do not attend, you may instead complete the online quiz to obtain CPD credits. However, we expect that you will want to attend, in order to get the additional insights and perspectives of a live instructor.

If I attend the live webinar but don't write the quiz, can I still claim any CPD credits?

CPD credits are based on the hours you spend in professional education. The 2 hours you attend a live webinar are eligible CPD credit hours. In all live webinars, 2 credits are achieved by actively participating in the live webinar and an additional 2 credits are achieved by completing the 2 hours of pre-reading of course content. You must both actively participate in the live webinar and have completed the 2 hours of pre-reading on your own in order to claim the full 4 CPD credit hours (if you do not do this reading, you can claim the 2 hours you attended the online classroom).

Will I receive any formal notice of successful completion?

As long as you attended the session and actively participated (answered polling questions and evaluation survey during the live webinar), then you will receive a letter of completion from our office
