Financial Support

Summary
For incoming students starting in September 2011, financial support which includes tuition plus $26,000 per year for the first four years of the PhD Program is provided, assuming that one maintains satisfactory progress in the PhD program.

Tuition fees are covered for the first four years in the PhD program with additional financial support as follows:

First Year
$17,500 fellowship plus a summer research assistantship of $8,500.

Second Year
$17,500 research assistantship during the academic year plus a summer research assistantship of $8,500.

Third Year
$17,500 combination of research assistantship and/or teaching assistantship during the academic year plus a summer research assistantship of $8,500.

Fourth Year
$17,500 combination of research assistantship and/or teaching assistantship during the academic year plus a summer research assistantship of $8,500.

Doctoral students are expected to be in residence year-round. For academic reasons, outside employment is discouraged. Course work, research papers, seminars, and summer research projects are all challenging and time-consuming. Outside employment distracts students from their studies and slows their progress.

Early application for admission to the doctoral program significantly increases opportunities for financial assistance.

Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council Funding
The Government of Canada, through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council (NSERC), offers substantial fellowships to assist Canadian research and scholarship. The awards are made on a competitive basis to Canadian citizens and landed immigrants. Nominations for SSHRC and NSERC Fellowships are solicited directly from the Faculty in September for the following year.

International students should contact their home university's awards office for information on fellowships and scholarships.

Most doctoral students supplement their scholarships and fellowships with employment as research and/or teaching assistants. These positions are usually readily available. Research assistantships are encouraged, particularly if they are in the student's field of specialization and can lead to dissertation research.
