3. About Admissions
3.1 Do I need work experience to gain admission to the MM-ECM?
No. Most students enrolling in the MM-ECM will enter directly from their undergraduate degree. Therefore, full-time work experience is not required. Many, but not all, applicants will have part-time, summer or co-op employment experience.
3.2 What are the academic requirements for admission to the MM-ECM?
Applicants are required to have a 4-year degree (or equivalent) with about a B+ (76% or 3.3 GPA) average on 300 and 400-level courses. Degrees and grading systems differ widely between countries. We recommend that applicants have academic backgrounds within the general requirements listed on UBC's Faculty of Graduate Studies' website to ensure a reasonable chance of gaining admission to the UBC MM-ECM program.
3.3 How do I apply to the MM-ECM?
MM-ECM applications are accepted online. The online application requires the submission of your resume and three short compositions.
3.4 What supporting documents are required for application to the MM-ECM program?
The following items are required for and MM-ECM application:
- Official transcripts (and in some cases degree certificates) for all post-secondary institutions attended (UBC students do not need to submit UBC transcripts)
- Two references - submitted through the online application form
- Official GMAT or GRE score
- An English Proficiency Test is required for all candidates whose degrees are from a university outside Canada or the USA in which English was not the official language of instruction
3.5 What is the application fee?
The application fee is $125 CAD. It is paid by credit card online when submitting the online application.
3.6 What are GMAT and GRE exams? Are they required? What are good scores?
The GMAT and GRE are both standardized tests commonly used for graduate-level admissions. MM-ECM applicants must submit either a GMAT or GRE official score to be considered for admission. For the GMAT, a competitive score would be 600, with at least a 50th percentile in each category. For the GRE, a competitive score would be a 1300+ on combined Verbal and Quantitative sections.
3.7 I have a 3-year degree. Can I apply for the MM-ECM program?
Typically, a 4-year degree is required for entrance to graduate programs at UBC. However, we do review 3-year university degrees on a case-by-case basis. In the past, we have accepted candidates with 3-year degrees from Canada, Europe, Singapore and Australia/NZ.
4. About Tuition & Scholarships
4.1 How much is the MM-ECM tuition?
The ECM tuition is currently $25,272.00 CAD. It is payable in three (3) installments in September, January and May.
4.2 What type of scholarships/awards and financial assistance are available?
A limited number of merit-based scholarships up to $5000 will be awarded after the application deadline of May 15th. Canadian and Permanent Resident MM-ECM students may also apply for government student loans. Your personal bank may also offer student loan programs.
5. About MM-ECM Careers
5.1 How does the MM-ECM support students in their job search?
The Business Career Centre (BCC) offers both personal consultation and a structure program to help you identify, develop, and achieve your unique career goals. Early in your program you'll complete a web-based self-assessment test that will help you clarify your career direction. Once your studies are underway, you'll benefit from one-on-one career coaching and career workshops.
5.2 Are Internships available?
Upon launching the MM-ECM program, we offered students the opportunity to participate in an optional internship program. Students were responsible for securing their own internship with the assistance of the Business Career Centre. Based on feedback from current students and the Business Career Centre, we have decided to remove the optional internship component of the program and have replaced it with built-in, applied work experience throughout the program gained through group projects with local companies and community organizations. Employers have told us that our MM-ECM students have the skillset to gain professional employment after completion of the required coursework, and an internship is often redundant. Students completing the 2012 entry of the MM-ECM program will still have assistance from the BCC in finding an internship if they wish explore this option; however, based on the experience of the current MM-ECM class, we expect most students to secure permanent, full-time positions rather than internships upon completion of the MM-ECM program.
5.3 What type of post-MM-ECM position can I expect?
The BCC actively promotes UBC MM-ECM graduates to the business community, locally, nationally, and internationally. Leveraging their long-standing relationships with prominent companies and organizations, the BCC arranges recruiting events and interviews and posts MM-ECM positions on the Career Centre website. MM-ECM graduates can expect entry-level or junior management positions.
6. About MM-ECM Preparation
6.1 I don't have much quantitative experience. How can I prepare for the MM-ECM?
If possible, take introductory level courses in any of the following subject areas: finance, accounting, economics and business statistics. In addition, we recommend that you attend our optional MM-ECM Preparation course taking place from August 15-24th, 2011, which is designed to provide you with the fundamentals of quantitative methodology, economics and statistics. Further information about this course will be sent out to accepted students during the early Summer.
6.2 What other areas should I work on prior to starting the MM-ECM?
As much as possible, strengthen your business/academic writing skills, oral presentation skills and expertise with Excel and Power Point. You may wish to consider taking some Continuing Education courses in these areas and joining a speaking club, such as Toastmasters.
6.3 English is my second language. How can I best prepare for the MM-ECM?
Strong written and oral English business communication skills are required for both academic and social success in the program. Furthermore, the likelihood of being successful in internship or permanent position recruiting is significantly increased with strong language skills. If your language skills are strong, but need some polishing consider enrolling in a high-level ESL program during the few months prior to the MM-ECM start.
6.4 I've been accepted to the MM-ECM program. Where can I get further advice on preparation?
Contact the MBA & MM-ECM Programs Office. An advisor can provide personalized advice based on your specific background by email, telephone or in person.
