Earn your CMA designation with your UBC MBA
The Sauder School of Business is proud to partner with the Certified Management Accountants (CMA) of British Columbia to offer the MBA-CMA Combined Program. This unique opportunity combines the strategic leadership core of CMA and the results-focused curriculum of the UBC MBA into a program that allows qualified applicants to work towards their CMA designation while completing their MBA - saving applicants time and money.
After finishing their MBA at the Robert H. Lee Graduate School at the Sauder School of Business, graduates complete the CMA Accelerated Program, gaining technical competencies in accounting and finance. They must also complete the three main evaluation components of the CMA Program: the CMA Entrance Exam, Case Exam and Board Report.
Recognized and respected around the world, the CMA designation is a business credential like no other. It is the calling card of a strategic management professional with proven expertise in strategic financial management, business knowledge, and leading-edge management skills. That's why nearly 50,000 CMAs are providing real world strategic direction, business management, and leadership all over the world today.
The applicant must apply for the program either in the last year of the program, or within 1 year of completing the MBA. The following courses must be successfully completed (60% pass minimum on each course) as part of the MBA program at UBC. These requirements most closely match the Strategic Management concentration.
Mandatory courses
- Completion of MBA Pre-Core (Quantitative Methods, Economics)*
- BAAC 500 – Financial Reporting
- BAAC 501 – Financial Statement Analysis**
- BAAC 510 – Cost Analysis for Decision Making
- BAAC 511 – Accounting for Performance Evaluation**
- BASM 501 – Business Strategy
- BASM 502 – Corporate Strategy
- BAPA 500 – Managerial Economics*
*These courses can also be taken by CMA self-study, or at an alternative institution.
** If either of these courses are absent, an equivalent course as found in the
Advanced Standing Guide must be taken prior to starting the CMA Program. CMA also offers these courses through the
QuickStart Program.
Other Requirements
- Completion of two years of relevant practical experience
- Successful completion of the CMA Accelerated Program (AP)
- Passing the three main CMA evaluation components: National Entrance Exam, Case Exam, Board Report
Students who have attempted the CMA program, prior to entering the MBA-CMA program, cannot have exhausted their attempts in writing the CMA National Entrance program. All students are given a maximum of 3 attempts to write the CMA National Entrance exam, regardless of when they enter the CMA-MBA Program.
UBC MBA program candidates interested in pursuing the CMA designation must submit an application for membership to CMA Canada - British Columbia upon acceptance into the UBC MBA program. For more details on this combined program, please visit CMA's website.
