Emily Young’s transition from economics to accounting leads to an interesting career with Deloitte LLP
What to do with a degree in economics? For Emily Young, who knew she wanted to work in business, it was an introductory accounting course that piqued her interest in the profession and shaped her decision to pursue the UBC Diploma in Accounting Program.
“UBC DAP was the perfect fit for me,” says Young, who was impressed by the program’s reputation with industry and track record of its graduates. “It allowed me to complete my economics degree then go on to earn my CPA prerequisites.”
Coming from a background in economics, Young made a smooth transition into the program.
Ask Young about the things she valued about her UBC DAP experience and you get an enthusiastic response. “I can’t say enough about the networking opportunities available to you as a student,” enthuses Young. “You get many opportunities to meet accounting professionals and learn about the industry. As careers are built on relationships, this is the perfect place to start.” She also appreciated the program’s job search support services and the fact that UBC DAP instructors were able to draw on their experience in public practice and industry to bring a high degree of career relevancy to their teaching.
The Career Path
Young describes her work as Manager in the audit public group at Deloitte LLP as “busy and exciting”, largely because of the diverse group of people she works with. She joined the firm right after graduation from UBC DAP and never looked back.
