Achla Jha's Unexpected Journey To Accounting
Initially, Achla Jha had not planned to become an accountant, despite it being the vocation of both her father and grandfather. Exposure to bookkeeping and teamwork while working with a private counselling company got her thinking seriously about accounting. “I realized that something I once considered boring was actually really interesting, requiring innovation and critical thinking,” says Jha.
“Having attended UBC for my undergraduate degree, UBC DAP was the obvious choice for me. I understand the value of the UBC brand and the reputation of the UBC Sauder School of Business and the Program within the accounting industry,” she explains.
Although the UBC Science curriculum was very different, Achla found the transition to UBC DAP very smooth. “The program is challenging but I have felt well supported by the faculty who are more than willing to answer my many questions through meetings outside the classroom or by email.”
Achla positively beams as she talks about the energy and inspiration she draws from her fellow classmates. “In the first few days of the program, I made friends from around the world that I’m convinced will be with me for the rest of my life,” says Jha. Like many other UBC DAP students, Achla values the Program’s scheduling flexibility which has enabled her to study and maintain a social life while continuing to work. She is also enthusiastic about the knowledge she has gained through the ongoing networking and career development workshops available to all UBC DAP students.
The Career Path
Achla plans to complete the CPA designation over the next 5 years and hopes to develop a career in healthcare or education.
