The UBC Sauder School of Business and the Centre for Operations Excellence (COE) are hosting an afternoon reception for partners of the COE, members of the business community, and alumni. Sauder and the COE will be celebrating their 2017 Industry Projects; a showcase of applications in business analytics and operations research, and a spotlight on students.
Keynote speaker Dr. John Lee, Director of Data Science at KPMG’s Data & Analytics Center of Excellence (The Lighthouse), will speak about the confluence of Big Data with Operations Research, and how this will create both new ways to solve old problems, in addition to creating the platforms and data to solve new and emerging problems. A few examples from KPMG will be presented to illustrate the idea.
After the formal program, you’ll have a chance to meet our graduating Master of Management in Operations Research class at the reception and project showcase. These talented students will be available to demonstrate the projects they delivered to our industry partners, as one of their final program activities before entering the workforce.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
John Lee is a Director of Data Science at the KPMG's Data & Analytics Center of Excellence, the Lighthouse, which provides scheduling solutions for sports conferences, simulation modelling for staffing, infrastructure project scheduling, vehicle route optimization, facility location and consolidation, pricing optimization, and revenue/portfolio optimization. His expertise is in optimization and unstructured data analytics, synthesizing methods from operations research, artificial intelligence, machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) to solve targeted client problems. He has also worked on measuring political risk in news, automotive quality from social media, and automating legal review of financial documents. Prior to KPMG, he has worked in ballistic trajectory modelling, and in the optimization of large-scale circuits under process variations. He received his PhD from UCLA.
