IT-Induced Complexity & IT-Enabled Solutions to Complexity

Information technology (IT) has induced complexity in business by becoming fused into the fabric of products, services, and business processes. IT has also contributed to the emergence of complex adaptive business systems (CABS) by affecting the diversity, adaptiveness, interconnectedness, and interdependency of organizations. IT-enabled solutions are being touted as potential solutions to emergent managerial challenges in CABS. This research symposium aims to:

1. Bring together researchers and practitioners to make sense of IT-induced complexity in business and IT-enabled solutions to business complexity

2. Motivate further interest in advancing knowledge on the role of information management in CABS

3. Build a community of scholars and practitioners who are interested in complexity and IT

4. Build further interest in and support for symposiums, conferences, and journal special issues that focus on complexity and IT

Themes to be discussed in this year’s symposium include, but are not limited to:

  • Complexity in IS strategy
  • IT-induced complexity in business management
  • IT-enabled solutions to business complexity
  • Role of information in complex adaptive business systems
  • Software and IS development for complex adaptive business systems
  • Complexity in social media
  • Research methods for studying information and IS related phenomena in complex adaptive business systems
  • Curriculum implications of IT-induced complexity and IT-enabled solutions to business complexity
