The Social Ventures for 2014:
Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society
Fresh Roots builds and maintains neighbourhood market gardens with institutions and neighbours. The food we grow is sold back into the community and the space becomes a place for learning and engagement. We help institutions transform their spaces into community focal points, bringing together multicultural and intergenerational communities to learn, celebrate or simply experience the joy and wonder of growing, and eating, food.
Mealshare allows you to share a meal with someone in need when you dine out. When a customer chooses a Mealshare item from a participating restaurants’ menu, a meal will be donated to a person in need. Mealshare donates to international and local charities in their efforts to help the millions of people who are food insecure globally.
Natural Source Vending
Natural Source Vending designs, builds and manages, free-to-staff nutritious food stations, providing offices with high quality, locally sourced and all-natural snacks to keep employees energized. Natural Source Vending is strongly commitment to the environment. All food service equipment is not only high quality but also Energy Star rated, and all facilities are powered by wind.
Shifting Growth Garden Society
Shifting Growth Garden Society has a mission to transform vacant spaces into temporary community gardens and growing spaces. They are becoming part of the solution for the long waitlists for the city’s community gardens. Shifting Growth can fill any vacant commercial and private property with removable garden beds, instantaneously creating a temporary community garden for the neighbourhood.
Skipper Otto’s is a Community Supported Fishery that connects local independent catchers directly to consumers, cutting out middlemen and increasing the income of the fishers. The CSF researches and educates both ends of the supply chain about the conditions for each type of fish to ensure sustainable yield each season without damaging the ecosystem.
