With funding from CANARIE, a national research network, Sauder S3i engaged in research to explore possible solutions for greening an organization’s Information Technology needs. The study explored how relocation of a company’s data centres can reduce an organization’s carbon footprint, whether carbon offsets can be used to fund a relocation and what the financial implications are of such a move. The research also developed specific scenarios and cost benefit analyses for UBC’s IT data centre needs by addressing its server locations and renewable energy options.
