With the creation of the Heiltsuk Economic Development Corporation (HEDC) in 2006, the Heiltsuk Tribal Council (HTC) successfully separated business from political interests. As one of its first initiatives, HEDC created a 15-year Economic Development Plan, which is intended to attain economic self-sufficiency and improvements to the Heiltsuk standard of living. HEDC has since managed a transition of 12 companies for its own governance, but the need to create an outside business analytical framework was revealed. This project equipped HEDC with a due diligence toolkit, which evaluates business opportunities through an economic, social, environmental and cultural lens. This systematic evaluation process is envisioned to create a robust and sustainable suite of business units that provide long-term value to all Heiltsuk people.
