[The COE] helped to significantly reduce the problem of surgical cancellations.
"Through using Operations Research methodologies, the COE at UBC were able to help us develop various patient flow models to evaluate the impact of scheduling surgeries in the Operating Rooms at BC Children's Hospital. The implementation of an Open Access Room, developed solely for urgent and emergent pediatric surgeries, has resulted in a reduction in overtime in the Operating Room and Post-Anesthetic Care Unit and has helped to significantly reduce the problem of surgical cancellations. Importantly, it has allowed us to place urgent complex surgeries into daytime hours as opposed surgery after hours."

This is a very powerful tool that... will be around for many years.
"The COE team has done an excellent job of putting together a simulation model of the preboard screening process at Vancouver International Airport. This is a very powerful tool that allows you to do 'what-if' scenarios. This has also allowed us to develop service standards, and given a great deal of benefit to the Airport, now and in the future. It's something that will be around for many years."
