Career Profile
Robert (Bob) Smith is the former President and CEO of the Fraser Health Authority, one of Canada's largest integrated health organizations delivering health services to 1.4 million people in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley areas of British Columbia from a budget of $1.7 billion. With 22,000 employees, Fraser Health is one of the largest organizations in the province.
Bob served as CEO from June 2002 to Feb 2005. His prior appointments include the positions of President and CEO of the Capital District Health Authority in Halifax, Nova Scotia; President and CEO of Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver, BC; Deputy Director of the BC Cancer Agency; and Executive Director of the Arthritis Society in BC.
He has held numerous health leadership roles provincially and nationally, including Chair of the Canadian Hospital Association, Chair of the BC Health Association, Director of the Association of Canadian Academic Health Organizations; Director of the Health Administrators Association of BC. He is a founding Director of the Canadian Telehealth Society and currently a Director of the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation and Member of the Health Care Leaders Association of BC. He most recently served as Director of the Canadian Healthcare Association, Ottawa; Director of Continental Home Health Care Inc., Los Angeles; Saint Elizabeth Health Care, Toronto; and as Co-Chair of the Health Division of the United Way of the Lower Mainland.
Bob received his BCom and MBA from the University of British Columbia, and has taken additional studies through the Executive Development Program at Queen’s University and the Banff Executive Development Program. He is a Fellow in the Canadian College of Health Service Executives.
