Career Profile
Dr. Smith attended the University of California at Berkeley where she obtained a Ph.D in Business Administration in 1974. In 1965, Dr. Smith obtained a Bachelor's degree in Commerce with Honours in Economics and Accounting, from the University of British Columbia.
Dr. Janet R. Smith now serves as President of the Global Diversity Institute after retiring from the Public Service of Canada in August, 2000. She was appointed Chair, Task Force on an Inclusive Public Service effective January 18, 1999. From October 1995 until this appointment, Dr. Smith was Principal, Canadian Centre for Management Development Dr. Smith was also Chair of the Federal Task Force on Service Delivery Models until its completion in December, 1996.
From June 1993 until October 1995, Dr. Smith was Deputy Minister of Western Economic Diversification. From March 1993 to June 1993, Dr. Smith was Deputy Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs. From November 1989 to February 1993, Dr. Smith was Executive Director of the Royal Commission on National Passenger Transportation. Dr. Smith was Deputy Minister, Privatization and Regulatory Affairs from 1986 until 1989 during which time she developed and implemented the privatization program. From 1985 to 1986, Dr. Smith was Associate Deputy Minister at the Department of Transport. As Associate Deputy Minister at Transport, Dr. Smith chaired the Task Force on Airport Management and the Program Control Board and was responsible for Expo 86.
From 1981 to 1985, Dr. Smith was Assistant Secretary to the Cabinet, Economic and Regional Development Policy at the Privy Council Office, where she was responsible for monitoring and advising on the general direction of economic policy. From June of 1972 she held various positions in the federal public service.
From 1969 to 1972 Dr. Smith was an Assistant Professor at Simon Fraser University.
Dr. Smith attended the National Defence College of Canada in Kingston from 1977 to 1978.
